Where do our sheepskins come from?

Most of our sheepskins are sourced from New Zealand and Australia. The pleasant news is that sheepskin is a by-product of the meat industry and no animals are harmed specifically for use of the skins. In actual fact, we make use of a natural resource that, if properly cared for and tanned carefully, will last for a lifetime.

How durable is my sheepskin?

Where do our sheepskins come from?

Very durable! Our sheepskins will last a lifetime if they are cared for properly and used as the products were intended. Shorter wool clipped rugs and those made from stronger wool types will withstand more wear than longer wool unclipped rugs or finer wools. We have provided extensive Caring for Sheepskin guidelines to help maintain the properties and life of the sheepskin products.

ABOUT SHEEPSKIN WOOL

Ounce for ounce, sheepskin wool products are stronger than steel. Your sheepskin items will last for years, with minimum care, by brushing and shaking them out or by vacuuming them. Impossible to copy synthetically, real sheepskin and it's wool fibers offer an astounding list of natural qualities. And they make great gifts.

They are warm in the winter and cool in the summer and prevent excessive sweating when you sit on them, providing natural comfort you find only in real sheepskin. That is why they are so popular used as seat covers on cars, trucks, planes, motorcycles and any place you choose to sit. They are also good for healing and preventing bed sores. We can make custom seat covers to fit almost any seat.

SHEEPSKIN WOOL

Sheepskin wool does not shed because it's attached to the skin. It's not woven and then brushed up like wool pile fabric that's loose enough to be pulled out or worn off. Sheepskin wool is embedded into the leather . . . resists snags, tears, wrinkles, soiling and pilling . . . drapes beautifully, never sags and retains it's shape . . . is static-free . . . is flame-resistant . . . is wind-proof . . . is a natural moisturizer due to the high content of lanolin in the wool . . . is naturally water-resistant and is washable . . . Sheepskin wool is a pure organic product and is unlike any other fiber in the world.

WASHING

Wash our sheepskin rugs in a washing machine on cold water using a mild detergent, or wash by hand in a sink or bathtub. Do not use any heat! Heat will shrink your sheepskins. We do not guarantee sheepskins through washing. DO NOT WASH ANY SHEEPSKIN ITEMS WITH STITCHING SUCH AS SLIPPERS, HATS, GLOVES, ETC.! Only spot-clean these items.

DRY-CLEANING

You can also have your sheepskin items and wool bedding dry-cleaned, but be sure the cleaners know it is wool. Some cleaning chemicals will turn sheepskin wool products green.

Long pile sheepskin rugs rarely need to be machine washed. Vacuum your sheepskin rug as you would any rug. Most dust, dirt and spills remain on the upper surface of the sheepskin wool fibers. If something sticky is found on the sheepskin rug, you can clean it up using the suds from mixing liquid soap and water together. If Urine (pet or people) is the problem, we recommend using "urine gone" or a similar product on our sheepskin products.
